Today, a group of educators came together for professional development, focusing on race, systemic racism, and equity concerns in schools. Being the only African American on the team, I wanted to ignite a sense of urgency. Then this happened…
A Message for Educators Who Don’t Look Like Me…
Being darker than the color of cream - Somehow excludes me from the American Dream
Please tell me what you would do - If you were me, and I were you
Just for giggles, if you were me - How different would this conversation be
What exactly would you do - If the system directly impacted you
Tell me how else would you use this space - If your family was part of a targeted race
We know how different things would be - If I were you and you were me
So, I need change and I need it now - I need this for my kids somehow
We’re in a crisis, but you want to go slow - How do you justify that pace when you know
You know the truth, so you can’t go back - Now try doing this work like you’re the one who’s Black
